By 1977, Jack Markham had amassed a picturesque 10,000 acre ranch sprawling from foothills to rolling plains to hardwood river bottom…the Lazy S. A majestic Lazy S brand formed by piled whitewashed rocks greeted travelers along the interstate from one of the ranch’s hillsides. Even today, I torture my sons with stories of whitewashing the rocks as we drive by the symbol of my youth north of Ardmore.

Mr. Markham had worked hard building the Lazy S, but as life worked out there was a small 40 acre parcel on the very front corner off of the state highway and along the headquarters road that a stubborn old fellow owned.
